# Installation

> Install VoiceTypr on macOS or Windows in minutes

## System Requirements

Before installing VoiceTypr, verify your system meets the minimum requirements:

      * Intel or Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) processor
      * Built-in or external microphone

    * Apple Silicon for best performance
    * 8GB+ RAM for large models

    * NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel dedicated GPU
    * Latest graphics drivers installed
    * 8GB+ RAM for large models

      GPU acceleration provides **5-10x faster** transcription on Windows. VoiceTypr automatically detects and uses your GPU if available, falling back to CPU otherwise.

## Installation Steps

      <Step title="Download VoiceTypr">
        1. Visit the [latest release page](https://github.com/moinulmoin/voicetypr/releases/latest)
        2. Download **VoiceTypr.dmg** for macOS
        3. Wait for the download to complete (\~50MB)

        <Tip>
          Look for the `.dmg` file in the release assets section.
        </Tip>

      <Step title="Install the Application">
        1. Open the downloaded **VoiceTypr.dmg** file
        2. Drag the VoiceTypr app icon to your **Applications** folder
        3. Wait for the copy to complete
        4. Eject the VoiceTypr disk image

        <Note>
          VoiceTypr is **fully signed and notarized** by Apple, so you won't see any security warnings.
        </Note>

      <Step title="Launch VoiceTypr">
        1. Open **Applications** folder
        2. Find and double-click **Voicetypr**
        3. The app will launch and appear in your menu bar

        If you see a menu bar icon, installation was successful!
      </Step>

      <Step title="Grant Microphone Permission">
        On first launch, macOS will request microphone access:

        1. Click **OK** when prompted for microphone access
        2. If you missed the prompt:
           * Open **System Settings** > **Privacy & Security** > **Microphone**
           * Enable the toggle for **Voicetypr**

        <Warning>
          Microphone access is required for recording. VoiceTypr cannot function without this permission.
        </Warning>

      <Step title="Grant Accessibility Permission">
        For automatic text insertion at your cursor:

        1. Open **System Settings** > **Privacy & Security** > **Accessibility**
        2. Click the **+** button (you may need to unlock with your password)
        3. Navigate to **Applications** and select **Voicetypr**
        4. Enable the toggle for **Voicetypr**

        <Info>
          **Why this permission?** VoiceTypr needs accessibility access to automatically paste transcribed text at your cursor position in any app. Without it, text will be copied to your clipboard instead.
        </Info>

      <Step title="Download AI Model">
        On first launch, VoiceTypr will guide you through model selection:

        1. Click on the VoiceTypr menu bar icon
        2. Navigate to the **Models** tab
        3. Choose a model size (recommended: **base**)
        4. Click **Download** and wait for completion

        Model sizes and download times:

        * **tiny** (39MB) - \~30 seconds - Fast, basic accuracy
        * **base** (74MB) - \~1 minute - **Recommended for most users**
        * **small** (244MB) - \~3 minutes - Better accuracy
        * **medium** (769MB) - \~8 minutes - High accuracy
        * **large** (1.5GB) - \~15 minutes - Best accuracy, slower

          Start with the **base** model. You can always download additional models later or switch between them.

    ### Verify Installation

    After completing all steps:

    1. Look for the VoiceTypr icon in your menu bar (top-right of screen)
    2. Click the icon—you should see the main window
    3. Check the **Overview** tab for a green "Ready" status
    4. The default hotkey is **Cmd + Shift + Space**

        1. Visit the [latest release page](https://github.com/moinulmoin/voicetypr/releases/latest)
        2. Download the **VoiceTypr\_x64\_setup.exe** installer
        3. Wait for the download to complete (\~50MB)

        <Tip>
          Look for the `.exe` file in the release assets section.

      <Step title="Run the Installer">
        1. Double-click the downloaded **VoiceTypr\_x64\_setup.exe**
        2. If Windows SmartScreen appears, click **More info** then **Run anyway**
        3. Follow the installation wizard:
           * Choose installation location (default recommended)
           * Click **Install**
        4. Wait for installation to complete

        <Note>
          The installer will automatically install WebView2 if it's not already present on your system.
        </Note>

      <Step title="Launch VoiceTypr">
        1. VoiceTypr will launch automatically after installation
        2. Or find **Voicetypr** in your Start Menu
        3. The app will appear in your system tray (bottom-right)

        If you see a system tray icon, installation was successful!

      <Step title="Grant Microphone Permission">
        On first launch, Windows will request microphone access:

        1. Click **Yes** or **Allow** when prompted
        2. If you missed the prompt:
           * Open **Settings** > **Privacy** > **Microphone**
           * Enable **Allow apps to access your microphone**
           * Ensure **Voicetypr** is enabled in the list

          Microphone access is required for recording. VoiceTypr cannot function without this permission.

      <Step title="Update Graphics Drivers (Recommended)">
        For optimal GPU acceleration performance:

            2. Enter your GPU model or use automatic detection
            3. Download and install the latest Game Ready or Studio driver
            4. Restart your computer

            2. Use automatic detection or select your GPU model
            3. Download and install the latest Adrenalin driver
            4. Restart your computer

            2. Download Intel Driver & Support Assistant
            3. Run the tool to update your graphics drivers
            4. Restart your computer

          **GPU acceleration is optional but recommended.** VoiceTypr works perfectly fine on CPU alone, but GPU acceleration provides **5-10x faster** transcription speeds.

      <Step title="Download AI Model">
        On first launch, VoiceTypr will guide you through model selection:

        1. Click on the VoiceTypr system tray icon
        2. Navigate to the **Models** tab
        3. Choose a model size (recommended: **base**)
        4. Click **Download** and wait for completion

## Post-Installation Setup

### Configure Hotkey (Optional)

The default hotkey works for most users, but you can customize it:

1. Open VoiceTypr from your menu bar (macOS) or system tray (Windows)
2. Navigate to **Settings** tab
3. Click on the **Hotkey** field
4. Press your desired key combination
5. Click **Save**

  Avoid system-reserved hotkeys like Cmd+Q (Quit), Cmd+Tab (App Switcher), or common app shortcuts to prevent conflicts.

### Enable Auto-start (Optional)

To launch VoiceTypr automatically when you log in:

1. Open VoiceTypr settings
2. Find **Launch at startup** option
3. Toggle it on

### Model Management

You can download multiple models and switch between them:

* **Smaller models** (tiny/base) - Faster transcription, good for quick notes
* **Larger models** (medium/large) - More accurate, better for important content

Switch models anytime in the **Models** tab without re-downloading.

## Troubleshooting Installation

    1. Ensure you're running macOS 13.0 or later
    2. Try moving the app to Applications folder if not already there
    3. Open Terminal and run: `xattr -cr /Applications/Voicetypr.app`
    4. Try launching again

  <Accordion title="Windows: SmartScreen blocks installation">
    This is normal for new applications:

    1. Click **More info** in the SmartScreen dialog
    2. Click **Run anyway**
    3. Installation will proceed normally

    VoiceTypr is safe and open source—you can [verify the code](https://github.com/moinulmoin/voicetypr).

  <Accordion title="Cannot grant microphone permission">
    **macOS:**

    1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone
    2. If VoiceTypr is already in the list but disabled, enable it
    3. If not in the list, try launching VoiceTypr again
    4. Restart VoiceTypr after granting permission

    **Windows:**

    1. Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone
    2. Enable "Allow apps to access your microphone"
    3. Scroll down and enable Voicetypr specifically
    4. Restart VoiceTypr

  <Accordion title="Model download fails or is stuck">
    1. Check your internet connection
    2. Ensure you have enough disk space (models range from 39MB to 1.5GB)
    3. Try canceling and restarting the download
    4. If the issue persists, try a smaller model first
    5. Check [GitHub Issues](https://github.com/moinulmoin/voicetypr/issues) for known download problems

    1. Verify you have a compatible GPU (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel)
    2. Update your graphics drivers to the latest version
    3. Restart your computer after driver installation
    4. VoiceTypr will automatically detect and use GPU if available
    5. Check task manager during transcription to verify GPU usage

    Note: VoiceTypr works perfectly on CPU—GPU is just faster.

## Uninstallation

If you need to uninstall VoiceTypr:

    1. Quit VoiceTypr (click menu bar icon > Quit)
    2. Open **Applications** folder
    3. Drag **Voicetypr** to Trash
    4. Empty Trash

    To remove downloaded models and settings:

    ```bash theme={null}
    rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.ideaplexa.voicetypr
    rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/com.ideaplexa.voicetypr
    ```

    1. Quit VoiceTypr (right-click system tray icon > Quit)
    2. Open **Settings** > **Apps** > **Installed apps**
    3. Find **Voicetypr** in the list
    4. Click the three dots > **Uninstall**
    5. Follow the uninstallation wizard

    Downloaded models and settings will be automatically removed.
